After years of separation, 18-year-old dog finally reunited with his beloved family

It can often take mere weeks for a puppy to find its forever home after arriving at an animal shelter, yet senior dogs such as Kane the Pitbull may never get that chance.

Every year, over 3.1 million dogs arrive at shelters across the nation; unfortunately, only 2 million of these four-legged friends find their forever homes. Out of this remaining 1.1 million pups in need, elderly or larger canines often have a harder time finding new owners to love them.

With breeds such as Pitbulls already receiving a tattered reputation due to careless owners, the shelter was not holding out much hope when 18-year-old Kane arrived.

As a senior dog, any family that adopted him would need to be able to provide medical care for his afflictions. The pup was blind in one eye and had impaired vision in the other, while also experiencing crippling arthritis; but with some love and attention, he could still make an amazing addition to someone’s home!

Even though his medical bills were piling up and he was getting older, this sweet boy deserved the chance to be loved in a forever home. “He’s an outstanding companion,” proclaimed his foster mom Carole Sandy. “His disposition is so friendly and laid back – he’s just a joy!”

Carole and her team at the shelter were relentless in their advocacy for Kane, the senior dog. They spread his story on all of their social media accounts and even went so far as to get him featured by a local news station.

Eventually, this hard work paid off when just the right family noticed Kane’s plight and contacted Carole directly.

Kane arrived to the warm embrace of Phil and Ewa Halverson, and their enthusiasm for his presence was palpable.

Thanks in large part to Kane’s foster mother at the shelter’s tireless efforts, he could happily spend his remaining days with a loving family by his side.
