After 500 Days of Patiently Waiting in a Shelter, This Pup Was Finally Adopted And Given an Amazing Farewell

It’s hard to explain why Joey, a five-year-old pit bull mix, had spent more than 500 days in the shelter – but no one can deny his incredible magnetism. His irresistible charm sparks an immediate connection with every person he meets. It’s truly unfair that such a special pup has been stuck in the same place for so long!

The pup’s endearing personality meant that he made a lasting impression on the staff, and when Joey found his new forever home, they wanted to give him an unforgettable send-off. So it was decided: Joey would leave in high style!

Sweet Buffalo to the Rescue founder Kimberly LaRussa expressed that “the staff always wanted to make sure the shelter dogs knew how much they were truly cherished. So, we began a special send-off for them as an expression of our love and appreciation – ensuring that these pups felt happy about their exciting journey ahead.”

For the farewell celebration of their most esteemed resident, an extra special event was needed.

By adding a special touch of love, we gave Joey the peaceful send-off he deserved. With leis and treats as symbols of our friendship for him, it was truly touching to witness him covered in all the tokens at his goodbye ceremony. LaRussa shared with joy.

When Joey initially wandered into the shelter as a stray, no one expected him to still be around for over an entire year. Unfortunately, with little adoption interest in sight and his future seeming uncertain, the long wait eventually took its toll on poor Joey.

LaRussa attested, “[He] did the best he could to adjust. He was sincerely appreciated by our former employees and volunteers. Unfortunately, it became obvious that what [he] needed exceeded our capacity; a cozy bed for himself, affectionate hugs throughout the night, and someone dedicatedly devoted to him.”

When LaRussa saw the dejected pup, Joey, bawling in his kennel and cast down with despair, she chose to take action by capturing a short video of him which she swiftly posted on social media. Instantly, interest was piqued. Outshining all the other contenders was one special couple–Daryl Koczaja and Melissa Leuer.

As Leuer viewed the baby’s videos, tears streamed down her face and she thought to herself; “Who will be kind enough to help this poor infant?”. Little did she know that it would be them.

LaRussa organized a gathering between Joey and the potential adopters, and it became evident that they had an immediate connection.

“When we saw him for the first time, it was love at first sight!” Leuer gushed. “He ran to Daryl and showered him with kisses—it felt like he’d been waiting just for us all along. We knew this pup was meant to join our family!”

It took Joey a few days to adjust to his new life, but now he is an incredibly affectionate companion who showers them with smiles every morning.

“Joey is every bit as incredible now as he was when we welcomed him into our family,” Leuer expressed. “He fills our home with joy and light, and we can’t wait to create more memories together. There’s really no better pup than Joey — he truly deserves the perfect life.”
