Blind Golden Retriever Finds His Way with the Help of a Tiny Guide Dog on Walks

Experiencing the loss of any sense can be extremely difficult, a lesson Tao the Golden Retriever has painfully learned. Despite his 11 years of perfect vision and an ideal life, as he entered into his senior years glaucoma struck him down until eventually taking away his sight completely.

As Tao inspiredly adjusted to his lack of sight, his family worked hard to ensure he was comfortable and content. To that end, they decided on a remarkable solution: providing Tao with Oko – a loving seeing-eye puppy! Now the two Golden Retriever brothers are inseparable.

Melanie Jackson, a mother of Tao and Oko, was taken aback when her child abruptly went blind. On that fateful day, he seemed normal in the morning; however as time progressed, he began to shake his head as if a discomforting pain had hit him out of nowhere. Just five hours later they were at the vet where it became apparent that not only was Tao completely sightless but one eye would need to be removed too.

Despite the vets suggesting euthanasia as an option, Jackson was determined to find another solution; if Tao could remain content and safe without his sight, then she would stop at nothing to provide that for him. The expense and hard work weren’t considerations – because he isn’t just a pet but part of her family.

Even though Tao had to part with his second eye in a few weeks, Jackson managed the situation by regularly administering eye drops. In that time, she trained him so he could confidently navigate without having to rely solely on vision; hence, when his other eye was removed eventually, Tao already felt comfortable and safe doing things all by himself.

Knowing that even experts need assistance every once in a while, Jackson determined to get Oko as an aid for Tao. Not only would this furry friend provide companionship and cheerfulness, but it would also serve as protection throughout the day so that Tao wouldn’t have to endure difficult times alone.

From the moment Oko joined his new family, a special bond was created between him and Tao. The pup is always following his big brother around and happily, takes on the role of leader by leading Oko wherever they go with a leash. It’s evident that these two siblings love each other deeply, as Tao has never seemed more content since having a baby brother in tow!

Jackson was delighted when Tao began ascending and descending the stairs only three days following his surgery. But he knew that Tao required a companion to watch over him and keep him company, now that he is unable to view things in front of him.

Jackson was proven correct – Oko’s presence immediately uplifted Tao, making him feel secure. They have the most precious connection that can be seen when they frolic in fields and cuddle up for naps side by side. At 16 weeks old now, Oko is consistently mastering how to become an even better guide dog as his bond with Tao grows ever stronger.
