During an unfortunate car ride with his parents and siblings, Caleb’s life was irrevocably altered when a young driver – who was not much older than him – carelessly veered into their lane. Tragically, the accident claimed the lives of Caleb’s mother and both her children; however, against all odds, six-year-old Caleb survived despite suffering from severe injuries that posed a risk to his own life.
Caleb was the only one to make it out alive, yet he sustained horrendous injuries. While his broken bones could eventually heal, his traumatic brain injury might never go away and pose a severe threat of death, paralysis, or even permanent brain damage. To help him get through each day of struggle, Caleb’s father and grandmother worked tirelessly in any way they could.
It was an experiment with no certain outcome: the doctors proposed a non-conventional therapy by introducing Caleb to a canine companion. They hoped that playing and interacting with a friendly pup might initiate healing, so his dad – albeit hesitantly – accepted their suggestion.
Colonel, a loyal golden retriever, assisted Caleb in an imaginative and non-intrusive way to get his “medicine.” He was accompanied by Susan, his trainer. They patiently waited for any sign of reaction from Caleb – yet it didn’t take very long at all!
Even when Colonel snuggled up against Caleb in the hospital, trying to climb onto him as he slept, something remarkable happened. Caleb’s heart rate quickened and his respiratory function improved; a positive transformation due solely to one small change in his routine – being with Colonel!
