Boy Learns to Love His Skin After Meeting a Dog with the Same Condition

Children never want to feel different; sometimes, even a simple hairstyle can make them the target of teasing.

Eight-year-old Carter Blanchard from Arkansas faced an even more significant challenge when he developed vitiligo, a condition that caused white patches to appear on his skin. The adjustment was difficult for him, but everything changed when he met a furry friend named Rowdy.

Carter struggled with the drastic change in his appearance and the reactions of his classmates. His mom, Stephanie Adcock, told ABC News that he would often say he hated his face and the way he looked. He didn’t want to go to school and felt miserable about being different.

Things took a turn when Stephanie found a picture of a black Labrador Retriever named Rowdy with white patches around its eyes. Rowdy’s owners initially thought the white spots were due to aging, but they soon realized their dog had the same condition as Carter.

Rowdy’s owner, Niki Umbenhower, set up a social media account to share her unique dog’s story and help others dealing with vitiligo. Through this platform, Carter found a friend he could relate to.

Stephanie kept in touch with Niki and made sure Carter saw all the photos she posted of Rowdy. Although they lived more than 2,000 miles apart, Rowdy’s presence in Carter’s life significantly improved his attitude toward his condition.

Rowdy couldn’t verbally encourage Carter, but his positive spirit and personality were enough to boost the boy’s confidence. “It had to be Rowdy, it had to be a dog,” said Stephanie.

When their story was shared on KATU in Oregon, an anonymous viewer generously donated $5,000 so Carter could meet Rowdy in person. The two quickly formed an unbreakable bond and became best friends despite their distance.

Rowdy’s gentle comfort gave Carter the courage to face his condition, and they both serve as a reminder of the beauty in being unique. For Stephanie, who only wanted her son to be happy, finding support and connection through Rowdy was a tremendous relief.
