Dog Born With an Extremely Short Spine and no neck Doesn’t Know She’s Unique

Cooper, an American foxhound, is a one-of-a-kind pooch. He’s among the few dogs worldwide living with short spine syndrome, a genetic condition causing severe compression of the vertebrae and occasional fusion. Experts believe inbreeding causes this condition.

In 2017, a 2-month-old puppy was found abandoned near Halifax, Virginia. Animal control took him in and placed him under the care of Secondhand Hounds, a shelter in Minnesota. Elly and Andy Keegan agreed to foster Cooper and worked to improve his quality of life despite his mobility challenges.

When Cooper first arrived, he fell and fractured his neck in several places. However, his spirits remained high. A bone infection affected him a few months later, but he bravely fought through it. After successful surgery, Cooper became low-maintenance and could go to the bathroom independently.

After caring for Cooper for six months, the Keegans put him up for adoption, expecting numerous applications for the “happiest dog.” Surprisingly, no one wanted to adopt Cooper until one applicant appeared. The Keegans couldn’t imagine handing Cooper over to another family, so they decided to adopt him themselves.

Though Cooper initially struggled and still faces some hiccups, he now lives life to the fullest and brings joy to his forever home. Elly shared that their connection with Cooper was instant, making them a family from the start.

Elly expressed her sadness about many dogs with conditions like Cooper’s being euthanized. She believes they have so much living to do, and Cooper is a real example of that. Now a key member of their family, Cooper leads a happy, normal life.
