Family Unexpectedly Reunited With Their Lost Dog at an Adoption Event, Just in Time for Christmas

Unequivocallyit’s tough to lose a pet; this time of year renders it even harder. For some individuals, their biggest Christmas wish would be to have their pet home for the holidays.

One family’s Christmas wish came proper after an adoption event unexpectedly led to a “Christmas miracle.”

The Long Wait at the Shelter

When Pasadena Animal Shelter welcomed Gertie in June, they never expected her to have difficulty finding a forever home. Out of all the dogs available for adoption, Gertie was sadly one of their least popular pups and ended up staying at the shelter for much longer than anticipated.

The shelter wrote on Facebook, “We could not understand why she stayed with us for as long as she did. She was an absolute sweetheart who loved everyone and always smiled when she saw you.”

The shelter held an adoption event earlier this month at Texas Roadhouse, hoping that Gertie would finally be adopted into a suitable home. Ironically, she was adopted– just not in the way that they anticipated.

The pastor attending the event saw Gertie and thought he remembered the dog. After some consideration, he realized that Gertie could be the Aldape family’s missing dog from his church.

A Joyful Reunion

After the pastor made a phone call, the family came running over to discover that their long-lost dog, Gertie, had finally been found! It turns out that “Gertie” was Cookie, who had gone missing in June 2021.

Owner Berenice Aldape told the Houston Chronicle, “We looked for her everywhere. I went to every house on our block and put up fliers with her picture. It was like she just disappeared.”

The loss of the family dog broke their hearts–Berenice said she got her son a kitten, but he still missed his old dog terribly.

At the shelter, she thought there was no way Cookie could be the dog that she had lost months ago. But as soon as she saw Cookie, she knew she had found her pup.

“As soon as I laid eyes on her, I asked for a paw and she obliged. That’s when I knew it was Cookie,” Marie told the Chronicle. “We don’t have much money to spare for presents, but even if we did… we couldn’t put a price tag on what Cookie means to us. This dog is our Christmas miracle.”

Destiny Fulfilled

The shelter was also highly ecstatic. After witnessing Gertie/Cookie’s battle to be noticed by a family for months, they understand it was because she already had a family waiting for her back home.

“It turns out, this might have been part of destiny,” said Jennifer Laird, marketing director at the shelter, ecstatically when interviewed by the Chronicle.

We’re overjoyed that Cookie finally made it home, just in time for the holidays! What an incredible miracle ❤️
