On February 14, the Richmond Fire Department received a call from someone walking nearby who reported hearing a dog barking coming from within a storm drain.

When the fire personnel arrived, they were met with a harrowing scene: A 40-pound pit bull terrier mix was submerged in mud and water, with only its head visible above the liquid.

With courage and strength, one of the firefighters bravely ventured into the depths of dark water that stood 6-8 feet high. After finding a sturdy footing on a piece of metal jutting out from the concrete base, his colleagues handed him a rescue rope which he secured around their pup’s neck and brought her safely to shore.

In mere minutes, the firefighters managed to safely extract the pit bull mix from its precarious location. The entire call was completed within 10 minutes – a remarkable feat!

The caring veterinary professionals at Virginia Veterinary Centers took the pup in, and he was surprisingly unscathed from his excavation experience. Thankfully, “they said you would have never known he had been stuck in a storm drain,” according to Richmond Fire Department’s post about the rescue mission.

Richmond Animal Care and Control welcomed Michelangelo, the pup rescued by firefighters, with open arms. Although it appears he had been a stray without a collar, his future is now looking bright due to the wonderful folks at RACC who have made him available for adoption.
