Not only dog our best friends, but they are also extremely intelligent creatures who serve many purposes. For example, sheep herding dogs have the difficult task of safeguarding a flock of sheep and keeping them out of harm’s way.
Recently, a pack of 11 wild coyotes attacked a group of sheep, but one heroic Great Pyrenees herding dog fought them off and saved the flock.
On November 3, a group of coyotes attacked some sheep at a home in Decatur, Georgia, according to 11Alive. Homeowner John Wierwille said he was able to scare them away the first time, but they came back later that evening.

Luckily, Casper, his 20-month-old Great Pyrenees livestock herding dog, was there to defend the flock against the attacking coyotes.
Casper put up a fight against the coyotes after they got into the pen, and reportedly killed 8 of them. The dog was injured during the battle but fought for 30 minutes to protect his flock from further harm.
The other coyotes ran away, and Casper followed them. The owner was scared that the dog had died because of how long he was gone and how injured he looked when they found him.

John told 11Alive, “He looked sickly, almost like he was about to die. He came back home and just gave me this look that said ‘boss stop looking at how bad I look, just help me.'”
When Casper was found, he had severe injuries to his back and neck and was also missing his tail. At first, both vets and family were unsure if he would survive due to the gravity of his condition.
Casper’s journey has been a long and difficult one, but he is finally starting to see some progress.
“I’m amazed that he made it,” said Dr. Susan Brosman of LifeLine Animal Project. Clinic supervisor Maisie Hale added, “He looks much better now and his energy is up. I love him–he’s such a sweet pup.”

According to reports, online fundraising has covered the entirety of Casper’s medical bills, which would have cost between $15,000 and $20,000 otherwise. Although Casper still has a few months left in his recovery process, he is currently in good spirits and being praised as a hero.
We hope Casper recovers soon — he is a true hero for defending these sheep!
