There’s nothing more heartwarming than seeing a special needs dog get adopted. As their human parents, it’s our most important duty to provide them with a safe space where they are accepted for who they are. Your adopted dog might be lame, missing a leg, missing an ear, deaf, or blind, but they are so much more than just their physical conditions.

Dogs with special needs have personalities just like any other dog, and they can be just as bright. You can train them at home too! They might look or function differently than other dogs, but they still have the same heart of a man’s best friend.
Don’t shy away from adopting a dog with special needs if you’re capable of giving them proper care. It might seem like a lot at first, but every dog deserves the best we can give them. Many people who have raisedspecial needs dogs have gone online to share their stories.
They show how much love and effort they put into making sure their furry children live good lives despite any physical conditions they may have. For example, Eric and Yakoo —the story of a blind and deaf dog goes to show this_.
“When we first adopted him and brought him home, they said to us that he has to stay indoors all the time,” Eric shared with a far-off look in his eyes. “We did it for a couple of weeks like they told us too, but at the same time I was thinking to myself, ‘I want a dog who can enjoy life.
I don’t just want some pet that is cooped up all day every day.” In order to beat the odds, changing Yakoo’s quality of life forthe better , Eric researched about communicating with deaf individuals–even though all his references were about humans . He took an possibility by trying out what he had read and applied it towards Yakoo. Surprisingly , Yakoo responded each single time as ifEricwere talking directlyto him .
Since then, Eric and Yakoo have had some of the happiest moments together. In fact, Yakoo is even able to go outside now- something Eric was told would never be possible.
Eric spends much of his time giving Yakoo chances that other people said were impossible because he believes in him so much. Now they even have a little routine at home where Yakoo rings the bell by the back door when he needs to go out- He knows his way around inside completely by now! Eric says that since day one yakko hasshown how determined he is and caused zero accidents.. not bad for a first day pup if you ask me!
“I found this website that rescues dogs with special needs. I just saw his picture, and I was adamant that he was mine.” And so flew to Florida to take him home, before making sure if everything was alright for Yakoo – he needed the dog’s consent. “When we first met, tears just started streaming down my face; it was such an emotional moment.” Luckily, Eric got the approval he desired when Yakoo starting playing with him energetically and then laid next to him calmly. It seemed as though Yakoo chose Eric too and welcomed him into his pack-like family.
Eric and Yakoo were both fortunate to have found each other when they did. Eric had recently lost two dogs and was feeling the hole that they left in his life. Yakoo, on the other hand, needed a loving home where he would be accepted for who he is.
Due to Yakoo’s condition of being blind and deaf, some people might have been quick to write him off — but not Eric. He allowed Yakoo to live rather than just survive.”You can watch their full story by clicking on the video below.
