Injured and Abandoned, Dog’s Joyous Smile Lights Up As He Realizes His Rescue Has Arrived

Once in his life, Sanford was a destitute pup; however, things have since taken an unexpected turn for the better and he’s now a cheerful pooch.

Karen Velazquez, his foster mom, noted that he is the most content pup she’s ever encountered.

“He is my fifty-second foster pup and I tell you he has been the most cheerful companion thus far. He looks at me with such deep affection, an expression that neither any human nor pet in my life ever had for me before,” Velazquez shared with The Dodo. “I think it’s safe to say that unless sleeping or dining, there’s always a smile on his face.”

Before Velazquez adopted Sanford, he had been rescued from animal control after facing a traumatic experience: getting hit by a car and sustaining an injury that left him unable to walk. To add insult to injury (literally), Sanford also suffered from gunshot wound in his right hind leg.

His temporary home for a week was an overcrowded municipal shelter in Dallas, Texas; sadly, due to the lack of resources at this facility, he did not receive any medical attention.

When the Dallas DogRRR rescue organization discovered him, one of their volunteers was instantly drawn to his plight and knew she had to help.

Kerry Anechiarico, executive director of Dallas DogRRR, shared with The Dodo that when a volunteer approached him at the shelter, it was as if he had already accepted his fate. As she pointed out to The Dodo, “He was physically broken … and didn’t really make any effort to come and say hello. It’s almost like he had given up.”

An immense transformation occurred when Sanford was initially placed in foster care with Velazquez.

On May 1, only a few days after leaving the hospital, Velazquez welcomed him into her home. His arrival marked an incontestable shift in his demeanor as he beamed with smiles from then onward; it was clear that he had found refuge and security in her abode.

Before long, Sanford – or Sanfee as Velazquez lovingly referred to him – had settled into a life of contentment. He relished his home-cooked meals, delighted in daily walks with Velazquez and her other furry friends, and was truly at ease.

At 10 years old, Sanford is considered a senior — yet his energy and enthusiasm prove otherwise!

Anechiarico remarked, “At 10 years of age, he’s still quite the spry pup. It’s like when you meet a 95-year-old at a nursing home who acts as if they’re in their 50s – that’s our guy!”

According to Anechiarico, he will be a marvelous family dog; being friendly with other canines and humans, and absolutely excellent around children.

Going on to say, “He’s the ideal pooch you can come home to. He loves greeting people with a wagging tail and will happily keep you company all day long – he’s just super content now!”
