Mandy Iworrigan and her family, from Gambell, Alaska, had taken their dogs, Nanuq and Starlight, with them on a trip to Savoonga, a city on St. Lawrence Island. During their stay, both dogs went missing in the vast tundra. Although Mandy’s uncle reassured her that dogs often wander off and return, she began to lose hope as days turned into weeks.

The family was relieved when Starlight was found, but Nanuq remained lost. However, hope resurfaced when Mandy received a message from her father about a dog resembling Nanuq being spotted in Wales, 150 miles northeast of their home. Social media posts confirmed her suspicions—it was indeed Nanuq!

How Nanuq managed to survive weeks in the harsh wilderness remains a mystery. Mandy speculated that her dog might have hunted seals and birds for sustenance. She also wondered if shifting ice played a role in his unexpected journey to Wales.

When found, Nanuq had a swollen leg with two large bite marks, possibly from a wolverine, seal, or small polar bear. Despite his injuries and ordeal, he was in surprisingly good health.

Mandy used airline points to cover the cost of bringing Nanuq home. Although there were no direct flights between Wales and St. Lawrence Island, Nanuq hitched a ride on a charter flight for student-athletes.

Nanuq’s incredible survival story made him a local celebrity, and his family couldn’t be happier to have him home. Mandy joked that if dogs could talk, both Nanuq and Starlight would have amazing tales to share.
