Dogs are renowned for their deep-rooted loyalty and devoted affection. They can form genuine bonds with other animals, remaining by their side even in the most difficult of times.
Recently, one dog demonstrated the ultimate definition of love and loyalty when she refused to abandon her beloved companion after he was struck by a car.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis reported that a beloved canine had been hit by a car on Highway 70, and upon sighting the commotion around the hurt pup, an employee of the rescue immediately stopped to assist.
Much to their mutual distress, the dog was critically injured and his closest friend — a fellow stray who had been at his side throughout this ordeal — refused to abandon him.
As the anxious pup stood guard, rescuers assured her that they had come to rescue his friend. Consequently, “Soul” was given as a name for the injured dog, and its faithful companion was labeled “Heart” by the shelter.
As medical staff hastened Soul to the trauma center, Heart accompanied them, concerned for her friend. It was evident that she felt uneasy throughout their journey.
Tragically, Soul’s injury from the accident was too severe for recovery. He sustained a broken back that could not be mended and had to be put down, according to the rescue personnel.
Natalie Thomson of Stray Rescue expressed to Newsweek that while they are devoted to saving lives, the most humane decision is often saying farewell if there will be no quality of life.
All the rescue could do was give Soul some comfort in his last hours — and permit his faithful companion Heart one final opportunity to say goodbye. Sadly, Soul passed away yet Heart still stayed loyally by his side until the end.
Hoping she would comprehend the situation, they kept her with them throughout his departure; providing her time to bid him farewell. Thomson expressed, “She wanted to be close to him until he left and we respected that.”
A beautiful yet sorrowful photo speaks to the loyalty and devotion of Heart, who falls asleep on Soul as she mourns her friend. Stray Rescue expressed their empathy: “We share in Heart’s sadness.”
Heart’s devotion and fondness left everyone present feeling deeply touched, prompting them to search for a way to memorialize her companion forever.
In a touching tribute to their beloved pet, they expressed on social media that her collar will be adorned with a pendant containing Soul’s ashes so she may keep him close forever.
Both dogs had neither collars nor microchips, and they were likely strays. It is uncertain for how long the two canines were wandering around together, though Heart was covered in dirt.
With love, the rescue team gave this broken pup the bath she needed and promised to provide her all of the affection and attention that will be required for her to heal: “It’s time for you to start recovering, sweetheart.”
May you now rest in paradise, Soul. We know that the serenity of your abode has freed you from suffering and pain. Heart was undeniably an unwavering comrade who showered you with love throughout your life.
Our hearts go out to this pooch as she continues her sorrowful journey, and we ardently hope that brighter days lie ahead for her.
