Oscar, a 2-year-old American bulldog mix, has a permanent frown that makes him seem older than he is. He’s spent most of his life waiting for a forever home, and his solemn expression shows it.
When his family gave him up at just under a year old, the team at Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS) did everything they could to help Oscar. They treated an infected wound on his neck and cleaned him up after he’d been living outside. Despite their efforts, Oscar’s adoption search dragged on without any applications.
As time passed, Oscar’s pout only grew deeper. Rosa Fond, founder and president of Humans and Animals United, said, “Nobody was responding to their posts about him. Eventually, everybody forgot about him.”
Over a year later, MDAS reached maximum capacity and had to let go of longtime residents like Oscar. That’s when Humans and Animals United stepped in to find him a foster home.
Fond and her team worked tirelessly to find a temporary home for Oscar. The very next morning, they succeeded, and Oscar’s frown finally turned into a smile. “He was so happy,” Fond said.
Though Oscar was now happy, he still had a long road to recovery. He had heartworms and dental issues, but the team at Humans and Animals United committed to helping him feel better. As he began treatment, his bubbly personality blossomed, and he started to feel like a young pup again.
While waiting for his forever home, Oscar is in foster care and working with a trainer who partners with Humans and Animals United. He’s learning obedience skills to keep him safe and happy. Though no one has inquired about adopting him yet, Fond remains hopeful.
“He deserves a good home,” Fond said. “Somebody who’s gonna give him a lot of love and help him heal through the trauma he’s been through. Someone who’s gonna give him a lot of love and time to understand that he’s safe.”
Oscar’s friends at Humans and Animals United are hopeful that a loving family will adopt him soon. In the meantime, they’ll continue showering him with affection as he deserves.
With the hardest part of his life far behind him, Oscar’s previous post has turned into a permanent smile. Fond eagerly awaits the day when his grin grows even bigger as he finds his happily ever after.
