At only six months old, the now 10-year-old hen’s life was drastically changed when she started to lose her vision due to an eye infection. Despite receiving the best care from her loving family, she eventually went completely blind.

Thankfully, Peri’s family was steadfast in their commitment to making her new life as meaningful and fulfilling as can be—especially with the help of her canine companion Taj.

When Peri became blind, her pup was there to provide unwavering devotion and assist in the adjustment process. He embraced her with warmth and encouragement that enabled her to thrive despite the physical changes she had endured. His compassionate presence allowed Peri to savor life’s joys once again.

The human members of the family also took it upon themselves to aid Peri.

In an interview with The Dodo, Peri’s mother Christa Hubbard explained how they made sure to accommodate the hen’s degenerative eyesight. This entailed providing her with specialized low roosting bars and comfortable ottomans for rest, as well as keeping food on a rug that would make noise when stepped on – allowing Peri to locate it more easily despite her vision loss.

The family was so committed to Peri’s well-being that they even recruited a “chicken nanny” who would watch over her when they had to leave the house.

Peri found solace in her unwavering bond with Taj, as they did everything together. She had no fears or worries when she was beside her steadfast companion and confidant. Together, their friendship conquered all obstacles and enabled Peri to feel secure in any situation.

Sadly, after eight beautiful years together, cancer took Taj from us.

Peri was overwhelmed when she lost her lifelong companion, and the family’s worry for her only heightened as they saw how bereft she had become. They feared that Peri would never recover from this heartache.

But when Prei’s family chose to adopt two pitbull puppies, her spirits were lifted and she began to embrace life again.

Although no one could ever substitute for Taj, Peri formed a strong friendship with her siblings and developed an unbreakable connection with her sister Gracie.

Now, Peri and Gracie are devoted to each other forever. Gracie is always mindful of what her buddy needs and she routinely brings over their toys for easy access!

She takes extra precautions in ensuring that her little hen’s needs are always taken care of, vigilantly keeping an eye on her to ensure she is safe.

Peri has been blessed with the fortune of discovering not one, but two kindred spirits in her life.

Of course, Taj would be pleased to discover that Gracie is looking after his treasured companion with such dedication. Not only that, Peri is extremely grateful for having encountered them both!
