Dogs are more than just pets – they are family. Many dog parents work tirelessly on training their pups to ensure that their furry companions are well-behaved around strangers. Unfortunately, not everyone sees dogs, especially Pit Bulls, in the same way as loving pet owners do.
Toya Stewart’s Pit Bull Hazel had some aggression issues toward strangers, but Stewart knew that Hazel was a sweetheart around her loved ones. However, the city ordered that Hazel be put down due to her biting a mailman and a small dog. Instead of letting the authorities euthanize her beloved companion and best friend, Stewart decided to take matters into her own hands.
Hazel was only two months when Stewart brought her home. The dog was there for many of Stewart’s struggles, including an abusive relationship and homelessness. Hazel was always a sweet dog to her family. However, due to the few incidents, the authorities deemed her dangerous and ordered her to be euthanized. Stewart knew that all Hazel needed was additional training.
The city of Oklahoma ordered that Hazel be put down. In defiance of the order, Stewart chose to try to save her dog. She used a drone to survey the animal shelter’s property and then broke in. After two failed attempts, Stewart successfully rescued Hazel. She broke into the kennel by breaking a window and prying open the door to free the dog. Hazel followed as she crawled under the fence outside.
Stewart did not intend to break any laws or harm anyone. Her only goal was to save her beloved dog. She said, “I didn’t want to break any laws, I don’t want to harm anyone, I just wanted my dog.”
Stewart enjoyed a few more days with Hazel at home before they were located by the authorities. They took Hazel back to the shelter and brought Stewart to jail. While charges have not yet been filed, Stewart is prepared to face them. Despite her efforts, Hazel was still euthanized, and Stewart was devastated that she wasn’t given the body to bury.
Stewart, however, has no regrets. She says that she would do anything, even risk her freedom, to save her fur baby, Hazel. Stewart showed that her love for her dog knew no bounds, and any extra time she spent with her best friend was worth fighting for.
Although not everyone may understand Stewart’s unwavering dedication to Hazel, many dog parents would do the same if placed in a similar situation.
No matter what happens, dogs are more than just pets – they are valued members of the family. Pit Bulls, in particular, often receive an unfair diagnosis without the opportunity for the correct additional dog training. It is essential to remember that with extra training and patience, every dog can exhibit excellent behavior.
