A family who lost their dog eight years ago recently had a heartwarming reunion with their furry friend.
Harley, a dog who was believed to be lost forever, was found in terrible condition over the weekend in San Carlos Park. His family had moved to Missouri months ago and never thought they’d see him again–but he was microchipped, which ultimately led to his reunion with his rightful owners.
Betsy DeHaan recalls when her son Harry left the family home in Lee County back in 2014. He was only a couple of years old at the time. “I let them out to go to the bathroom,” Betsy said. “Turned my back for a second and they took off into the woods.” Despite looking everywhere, they were never able to find Harley again.

Betsy DeHaan said that they never stopped looking for her missing pet, even though she was constantly searching and putting up posters. She added that she only wants to tell him that she is sorry for not being able to find him.
Whoever took in Harley never checked for a microchip, and the DeHaans’ search didn’t bring up any results. If they had looked for a microchip, they would have found him sooner.

Angie Bray was instrumental in their reunion, “I had no idea how rundown he was until I got him home,” said Angie Bray. “He’s such a sweetheart, and so well-behaved considering everything. He seemed happy despite being skinny and having overgrown nails.”
Harley’s owner and a friend found Harley resemblance walking around Barto Boulevard in San Carlos Park. “It was really sad,” she said, choking back tears. “I just love my animals so much, and it breaks my heart to think of them being taken away from me.”
Bray took Harley to Cypress Lake Animal Hospital and Lee County Domestic Animal Services, where they used her microchip to locate her owner DeHaan.

“I received the text on Saturday morning and initially thought it was a scam,” DeHaan said. “We had just been talking about Harley that same day, pondering if he was still out there somewhere. But then I realized that this could be real.”
DeHaan drove from Missouri to Lee County just to be reunited with her beloved dog, Harley. She said he looked a lot thinner than before, but now she will make sure he is well-cared for and never goes hungry again.
