Recently, a fortunate twist of fate occurred when an abandoned dog at the airport was adopted by an airline pilot.

The San Francisco SPCA announced in a press release that Polaris had been left behind at the airport by his original owner over the Fall. It was reported that this individual, who’d arrived from abroad, “opted to continue on their journey without their dog.”

“The United Customer Service team went above and beyond to guarantee that Polaris would not only be safe but also healthy and loved in its new home,” declared Lisa Feder, Chief of Rescue and Welfare at SF SPCA in the press release.

Before entering the US, Polaris had to observe a mandatory quarantine period; however, due to the tireless efforts of United employees to ensure all his paperwork was in perfect order, he managed it with ease.

Vincent Passafiume, Director of Customer Service at United Airlines, shared that his team cared for Polaris 24/7 from the moment they welcomed him into their care. After securing a special exception to keep him safely in America, everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief!

The happy ending to Polaris’ story is that she was adopted by United Airlines pilot, Captain William Dale – the perfect conclusion to her journey!

The delightful feeling of the story coming full circle and seeing Polaris go to a loving home with United Airlines’ Captain Dale’s family, just in time for the holidays is incomparable. Passafiume echoed this sentiment when he stated: “It’s a great feeling!”

In honor of the announcement, United hosted a joyous celebration at SFO and gave $5,000 to the SF SPCA.

With great excitement, the SF SPCA accepted United’s invitation to help facilitate this adoption out of our knowledge and experience in adoptions as well as a track record that spans nearly 155 years dedicated to providing love and safety for animals. We feel incredibly lucky to be able to join in their celebration today while also acknowledging their generous $5,000 donation which will aid us in saving more lives throughout the year!

It’s heartbreaking to contemplate that someone would ever have the heartlessness to discard their beloved pet at an airport. Fortunately, recently a canine was discovered tethered outside of an Iowa airfield – though this story has been met with a happier ending as he will soon be available for adoption!

We are delighted that Polaris has found a new home – what an incredible ending to the story!

Please share this beautiful story! ❤️
