Rex’s bronze statue stands watch, a guard of honor for his late owner at the corner of Sycamore and Greenbough Avenues. His name is etched onto the stone platform that he sits on as if to memorialize him forevermore. He vigilantly watches over Stow’s grave in perpetuity with all due respect.

An incredible 100 years of commitment has been put in by him, and he’s certainly earned the title ‘good boy’. His loyalty to this place is so powerful that people are still placing sticks beside or before his feet as a sign of appreciation. It is genuinely heartwarming!

Rex is so celebrated that people even take to the internet and tweet about him! One enthusiastic tweeter remarked, ‘Such a good boy he still is – folks bring him sticks and lay them at his feet.’ His exemplary behavior has earned him an army of loyal admirers.

As the evidence suggests, a colossal collection of twigs, sticks, and branches had accumulated over time – something that would have undoubtedly delighted the dog in its sprightly days.

Stacy Locke, the communications manager for Green-Wood Cemetery, excitedly shared with The Dodo that ‘Rex is truly remarkable and stands out.’ Furthermore, she noted the joy visitors experience when spotting him from afar as he resides in a noticeable spot off of two roads near an intersection.

Since this is Rex’s natural habitat, she thought it fitting to leave a stick behind as an offering. She explains that the location of her gift “is right under a tree and there are lots of sticks around.”

“It’s not uncommon to find a stick across Rex’s tiny paws or for someone to leave behind a photo of their dog who recently passed away,” Locke stated. “I like to think they do so as an offering, entrusting him with the responsibility of watching over their little one.”
