Why should humans have all the fun when it comes to birthday celebrations? Dogs deserve to have their special day celebrated too, especially when they reach their golden years. One animal shelter recently went above and beyond to make sure a senior dog had a memorable birthday party.
Loco was surrendered to the Spartanburg Humane Society in 2020 due to various medical issues. At 13 years old, Loco suffered from heartworm, arthritis, and thyroid problems. These health concerns made it difficult for her to find a forever home, so the shelter decided to make her a permanent resident. Loco quickly became the shelter’s mascot and now enjoys life as an “office dog.”
“We moved her to an office that is more comfortable,” Angel Cox, COO of Spartanburg Humane Society, told The Dodo. “She has 3 to 4 dog beds, and sleeps in all of them.”
A few months ago, Loco celebrated her 15th birthday, a remarkable milestone considering her health challenges. To commemorate this special occasion, the Spartanburg Humane Society decided to throw Loco a one-of-a-kind birthday party!
The celebration included a pink sweet potato cake made especially for Loco by the pet treat company Excite Bites. Loco loved her tasty treat! The shelter staff also decorated the space for the event and dressed Loco in a cute party hat and a frilly collar.
Of course, no party would be complete without guests. However, Loco can be quite selective when it comes to her human and canine companions. She is not fond of other dogs and has strong preferences for certain people.
“She is picky about her people,” Cox told The Dodo. “When she loves you, she really loves you. But the people she does not like, she hates them. And she does not like other dogs at all.”
Given Loco’s unique social preferences, her birthday party was an intimate gathering of her closest friends at the shelter.
