During the lockdown, 10-year-old Jeremiah and his dad Dave Carter came up with a creative solution to keep their pup entertained – the “Stick Library” at the local park! With an array of different sticks for dogs to explore, this novel idea is sure to excite canines from all over.
Inspired by a stick library in New Zealand, this father-son duo from Canada set out to create their very own version. Making something each week has become a ritual for them and they decided that the ‘stick library’ would be their next project.
Jeremiah and Dave, along with their two-year-old Goldendoodle named Nala, constructed the library from the ground up. Their labor of love was filled packed with sticks for canines to savor.
After constructing the stick library, they securely attached it to a fence in the local park with zip ties and left. Excitedly returning to their creation the next day, they discovered that – much like an answered prayer – someone had made use of it!
Dave shared with CNN that to make sure their gesture of kindness wouldn’t go unnoticed, they secured the dog toy with zip ties and collected a multitude of sticks for four-legged friends. Whenever they’d return to the dog park there were either no toys or an abundance scattered around – proof that their initiative was appreciated!
After the launch of their ‘Doodles of Saskatoon’ Facebook post featuring the stick library, one thrilled person commented: ‘Thank you so much for creating this! Our pup Cocoa adores it!’
Dave revealed that Jeremiah was delighted to find out that his creative invention was being utilized, as it had provided him with a sense of gratification and significance.
He continued, noting that the new development seemed to bring an incredibly positive effect on everyone in the community. It had the special power of creating connections between us during these times when we are not able to be together as usual.
Taking the success of their first stick library into consideration, Dave and Jeremiah are aiming to introduce another version in a neighboring park.
