People Judged Him for Adopting a ‘Broken Dog’, But Knows He Has An Advantage

When Christopher decided to adopt a rescue dog, he was questioned. “Why adopt a ‘broken’ dog?” they asked. But they didn’t know this deaf puppy was about to change lives.

Christopher’s first rescue, a deaf puppy, held a special place in his heart. His nephew was also born deaf, forming an immediate connection. This relationship inspired Christopher and reshaped his perspective.

He recognized that the pup, Cole, had a unique way of connecting with humans. This inspired him to train Cole as a therapy dog to shift perceptions about differences.

Cole’s deafness became a surprising strength in his new role. Without the distraction of noise, he could focus entirely on the present moment. And when it was time for a nap, nothing could disturb his peace.

Cole commits to a full-time job as a therapy dog at an elementary school every week. He also visits hospice patients and is a local veterans’ home mascot. Additionally, Cole joins travelling school programs, promoting acceptance and disability awareness.

For six years, Christopher and Cole have been a team. Each day, they share moments with children, students, and hospice patients that remind them why they do what they do. It’s humbling to witness how a small deaf rescue pup can bring immense joy to people of all ages.
