A family in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania decided to leave their home one day and relocate elsewhere. However, they unintentionally abandoned a beloved brown dog. Despite being left behind, the faithful dog remained on the front porch where he had always slept, hoping his family would return for him. Unfortunately, they never did come back and he kept on waiting.
Janine Guido, the founder of a local animal rescue center called Speranza (which translates to “hope” in Italian), got multiple phone calls from residents in the area regarding a neglected dog.
However, other than that, there wasn’t much information available as Janine shared with The Dodo.
I was informed that the dog’s owners deserted him without any explanation. I inquired with several others for additional information, but all they confirmed was that the owners had moved out.
Guido reached the house and made an effort to get closer to Cupid, the dog who had been foraging in the dumpster. As soon as Cupid caught sight of Guido, the pup scampered back to the door and began scratching it with the hope of being let in.
Guido spent around 30 minutes trying to catch the little dog by chasing him through alleyways and offering him food. Eventually, she came up with a different strategy – talking to the dog in a soothing and reassuring tone. She had a feeling that the pup could sense her intentions of wanting to help him out.
“I know it may seem silly, but I truly believe that he understood me when I spoke to him. He willingly came over and took a seat, allowing me to put a leash on him.”
Guido recounted the story of how she assisted Cupid in a message on the touching photographs that were posted on Speranza’s Facebook page. Her words acted as a note to Cupid’s previous owners.
As I placed your canine inside my car, tears streamed down my face. Though it may have appeared mad, I communicated to him the circumstances during our journey back. It deeply saddens me that you were disappointed, but please understand that our intention is to support you. You will never be abandoned from now on.
