Kayla Filoon, a devoted volunteer at ACCT Philly, a Philadelphia-based animal shelter, forms a deep bond with a particular stray dog named Russ. Despite his rough appearance, Kayla discovers Russ’s sweet nature and decides to adopt him, saving him from possible euthanasia.
When Russ arrived at ACCT Philly, his condition was concerning. The underweight dog had patches of missing fur, bruises, and kennel cough. Despite his rough exterior, the 4-year-old Pit Bull caught Kayla’s eye as she passed by his kennel.

Kayla chose to take Russ for a walk and discovered that he was well-behaved and affectionate. To her surprise, Russ also knew basic commands. Kayla made up her mind to adopt him the next day, as the overcrowded shelter put him at risk of euthanasia.
Without delay, Kayla filled out the necessary paperwork and took Russ home. In less than two weeks, photos showed a well-adjusted, happy dog. A picture of Russ cuddling with Kayla on the couch went viral on social media.

As Kayla told The Dodo, Russ loves cuddling with her while she does her homework, always finding a way to be close to her. Even with other comfortable spots available, he prefers being near Kayla. He often lays his head under her arm or puts his paw over her chest.

Kayla hopes that the heartwarming photo of her and Russ will encourage others to adopt shelter dogs and provide them with loving homes. The story of Russ’s transformation highlights the difference that adoption can make in the lives of animals in need.
