The adoption of senior shelter pups is often overlooked as many people prefer to adopt puppies and younger dogs. However, these seniors are just as loving and affectionate, if not more so than the young ones – they simply need someone to give them a chance!
Meet Shey, a 14-year-old miniature poodle who is deaf, partially sighted, and lacking most of her teeth.
Abandoned by his family when they moved, Shey was brought to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and had to wait for months in desperate search of a new forever home.
When Shey arrived at the shelter, she was in a deplorable state. Not only deaf and partially sighted but also struggling with an enduring dental ailment due to lack of care.
Almost all of Shay’s teeth were severely decayed and had to be pulled out. With advanced age, disabilities, and teeth, the chances of finding an adopter for Shay appeared insurmountable.
For four long months, the senior pup waited in vain as one by one other pups were adopted and taken home to their loving families. All he wanted was someone to give him a chance; his heart was filled with love that desperately needed an outlet. But it seemed no one would ever be interested… until suddenly, a young boy stepped into the shelter – and everything changed!
Accompanied by his mother, Tristan visited the animal shelter in the hopes of finding a furry friend to give all their love and affection to.
The shelter team knew that Shey was the perfect fit for them, and they were excited to introduce Tristan to her.
When Shey and Tristan locked eyes, it was obvious that they were destined to be together. An observer from the shelter told The Dodo “Shey felt immediately relaxed with Tristan.” Their connection was undeniable!
The moment Tristan laid eyes on Shey, an immediate connection was formed. As he happily stroked her soft fur, his heart filled with joy. Unfazed by the fact that she needed extra loving care to meet her special needs, Tristan’s face shone with delight when told of this condition.
He attentively heard all the necessary details and made it known that he would do anything to make Shey feel joyful and secure.
Tristan made sure to take advantage of every opportunity to ensure that he could provide Shey with the best care. He also marked down future vet appointments on his calendar for her.
To other people, Shey may have been considered broken or too much to handle. However, Tristan simply perceived him for who he truly was: a kind-hearted pup in need of compassion and affection.
Now, Shey is blessed to have a family that loves and cherishes him for his delightful nature. He will no longer need to experience the feeling of being abandoned ever again. Tristan has showered Shey with unconditional love and tenderness, taking care of all his needs as if he were part of their pack!
She is truly blessed to have a loving family and can now look forward to each day with absolute joy and security. This young lad’s insightful understanding of the world serves as an inspiration for everybody around him.
