A TikTok user recently shared a remarkable story about her deaf dog, which inventively created its form of communication by imitating the body language of other barking dogs. It’s incredible how creative animals can be when it comes to communicating with us!
Lindsay Kelly and her family adopted Reggie from a rescue home, suspecting that she was born deaf. As such, Reggie has never heard the sound of a typical dog bark.
After watching the physical actions of other dogs while they barked, Lindsay assumed Reggie understood that her owners were paying attention to them and began mimicking their behavior.
In a recent video shared by Lindsay on TikTok, Reggie flourishes with her latest accomplishment: tossing back her head and letting out an endearing little squeal.
It took Lindsay a few moments to grasp what was happening, and she then shared with The Dodo. Initially thinking it was just a sneeze or cough when the animal continued repeating the sound and looking at her directly, realization dawned that this was an attempt to communicate.
Although Reggie’s bark is far from the loudest, Lindsay has learned to pick up on his subtle cues and can now understand exactly what he needs – which fills her with immense joy.
Lindsay beamed as she boasted, ‘She’s so proud of herself when she does it! Whenever our pup needs something or wants to get our attention, she barks at the pantry door and then looks up with an expectant expression – like if you don’t give her a treat now there will be consequences. It’s quite adorable!’
It’s no surprise that Reggie has been successful with her foolproof tactics. No matter what, she always seems to get everything she desires, even when it involves a few fake barks! As Lindsay describes it: “She’s usually able to get whatever she wants!”
